LAGOS — A devastating traffic accident along the busy Lagos Coastal Road on Friday morning, October 2, 2026 left one person dead and three others critically injured, casting a grim spotlight on highway safety along the newly developed transit corridor.
According to eyewitnesses, the multi-vehicle collision occurred around 8:30 AM when a high-speed passenger vehicle attempted an abrupt overtake, colliding head-on with an oncoming commercial minibus. The impact forced one of the vehicles off the roadway, leaving it severely mangled near the guardrails.
First responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived promptly at the scene to extract trapped victims. Paramedics confirmed one individual deceased at the site due to fatal head trauma, while three survivors were rushed to a nearby general hospital for emergency medical treatment.
"Our team responded immediately to a distress call regarding a high-impact crash along the coastal corridor," said an FRSC spokesperson. "Preliminary investigations point to excessive speeding and reckless overtaking as the primary causes of the collision. We urge all commuters to strictly observe speed limits, especially during early morning transit hours."
The accident caused significant traffic congestion along the stretch of highway for over two hours as law enforcement officers cordoned off the area to clear debris and tow the damaged vehicles.
Local residents and regular commuters have repeatedly raised concerns about speeding vehicles along the recently constructed coastal road, calling on transit authorities to install additional speed bumps, clearer road markings, and increased safety checkpoints to prevent future tragedies.
Police have launched a formal investigation into the crash to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the collision.
In light of the incident, advocacy groups for road safety are pressing the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation to fast-track automated speed-monitoring cameras along the coastal route. They argue that infrastructure developments must be paired with strict technology-driven enforcement to deter dangerous driving behaviors and protect lives on newly expanded highways.
