Tragic Building Collapse: Two Dead, Three Injured as Three-Story Hostel Crumbles in Anambra

AWKA — Two people have been confirmed dead and three others rescued after a three-story students' hostel collapsed in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The catastrophe has thrown the local student community into deep mourning and triggered renewed public outrage over building standards in the state.

The incident occurred late Sunday night, July 26, 2026 at a private student residence known as the Elite Five Star Lodge, located near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. The structure, which housed roughly 60 rooms, primarily accommodated undergraduate students from the polytechnic.

According to local residents and eyewitnesses, a terrifyingly loud noise echoed through the neighborhood just moments before the building gave way.

"We heard a very loud noise before the building collapsed," recalled Ifeoma, a student living nearby. "The noise immediately attracted residents and students who rushed to the area. Within moments, people were shouting for help as the entire structure came crashing down."

As dust settled over the massive heap of rubble, cries for help could be heard from victims trapped beneath the concrete slabs, sparking frantic initial rescue attempts by volunteers before official emergency services could arrive.

A massive, multi-agency emergency response was quickly mobilized to the scene. Personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Anambra State Fire Service, and the Nigeria Police Force worked throughout Monday using heavy-duty excavators to carefully clear the debris.

Ndidi Omega, the acting Executive Secretary of SEMA, confirmed that rescue teams recovered a female victim dead from the rubble, while three injured individuals were successfully extracted alive and rushed to a local hospital in Oko for urgent medical treatment. By Tuesday, authorities confirmed that a second body had been recovered from the site.

To facilitate uninterrupted rescue operations and safeguard the public, NEMA officials have cordoned off and sealed the premises with red tape. Security operatives remain on-site to maintain order as investigators begin looking into the structural integrity of the collapsed lodge.

The tragedy at Elite Five Star Lodge has reignited intense scrutiny regarding the safety of private student housing developments rapidly expanding around tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Many student lodges are constructed quickly to meet high off-campus housing demands, often circumventing rigorous engineering assessments and regulatory oversight.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information while the investigation continues. Meanwhile, the Federal Polytechnic, Oko community is left reeling, awaiting answers as to why a structure meant to shield young scholars instead became a fatal trap.
