BUDERIM, QLD — A tight-knit community on the Sunshine Coast is in mourning after a fast-moving, "large-scale" fire tore through a residential unit complex on Sunday night, July 19, 2026 claiming the life of a 21-year-old woman.

Authorities have established a crime scene at the site as forensic investigators work to determine the cause of the fatal blaze.

Emergency services were called to a unit block on King Street in Buderim at approximately 7:30 PM on Sunday following frantic reports of a serious structural fire.

When first responders arrived, they found one of the apartments completely engulfed in intense, towering flames. Firefighter Cameron Mackenzie noted that the unit was "well involved," posing an immediate threat to the rest of the complex and neighboring properties.

Due to the complex's close proximity to a nearby petrol station, police deployed a massive presence to secure the area and mitigate the community risk if the fire breached the perimeter.

During the chaotic evacuation of the residential complex, two women managed to flee the burning apartment with the help of quick-thinking neighbors. One of the residents, a 21-year-old woman from Kallangur, suffered extensive, life-threatening burns during her escape; she was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in critical condition but tragically succumbed to her injuries at 4:30 AM on Monday morning.

The other resident, a 32-year-old woman inside the same unit, managed to escape the inferno completely unharmed, while paramedics assessed a third woman at the scene who required no further medical treatment.

It took specialized fire crews roughly an hour to completely extinguish the apartment blaze before allowing displaced neighbors back into their homes.

The Sunshine Coast district's Criminal Investigation Branch has officially declared the property a crime scene. Arson squads and forensic teams are currently working through the charred remains to pinpoint where and how the fire started, and whether it was deliberately lit.

"Everything is in our scope at the moment for lines of inquiry," said Detective Senior Constable Robert Lowry during a press briefing on Monday morning. "We are speaking to people and they are assisting us with our inquiries."

Police have extended their deepest sympathies to the victim's family and are urgently appealing to anyone in the Buderim community with information or dash cam footage from King Street on Sunday night to contact them immediately.
