ABERDEEN, EASTERN CAPE — A devastating head-on crash on the R61 route outside Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape has left six people dead and six others in critical condition.
The fatal collision occurred approximately 30 kilometers outside Aberdeen, along the stretch leading toward Beaufort West. A Toyota Quantum minibus taxi carrying 16 passengers from the Western Cape collided head-on with an articulated truck.
The sheer force of the impact claimed the lives of six female passengers in the minibus taxi, all of whom died at the scene before emergency services could intervene. Six additional individuals sustained severe injuries in the impact and were rushed to Graaff-Reinet Provincial Hospital for urgent medical care. A secondary collision involving a Kia Rio and the crash wreckage resulted in another injury, though occupants of other vehicles involved managed to escape unharmed.
Emergency response teams, including officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and local paramedics, quickly cordoned off the area to secure the scene, assist the wounded, and begin cleanup operations.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC XolileNqata extended heartfelt condolences to the families grieving the loss of their loved ones and wished a swift recovery to those receiving treatment in hospital.
While forensic investigators continue working to determine the precise sequence of events leading up to the disaster, initial assessments suggest that driver fatigue may have played a major role. A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Aberdeen police station as authorities urge motorists traveling long distances to take frequent rest breaks and remain vigilant.
The tragic event has prompted renewed calls from road safety advocates for stricter enforcement of rest protocols for long-distance commercial drivers. Local transport authorities announced plans to increase high-visibility patrols along high-risk transit corridors like the R61 during peak travel hours, aiming to prevent further loss of life on Eastern Cape roads.
