Tragedy on the PIE: One Dead, Three Injured After Near-Simultaneous Crashes Paralyze Mount Pleasant Flyover

SINGAPORE — A highly unusual and tragic sequence of events brought traffic to a standstill on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) on Saturday morning, May 30, 2026, when two multi-vehicle accidents occurred almost simultaneously on opposite sides of the highway.

The dual crashes near the Mount Pleasant Flyover involved a total of seven cars and two motorcycles, leaving one person dead and three others injured. The incident heavily paralyzed traffic as emergency vehicles cordoned off critical lanes on both sides of the expressway.

The first accident took place at approximately 8:20 AM along the stretch of the PIE heading in the direction of Tuas, just before the Mount Pleasant Flyover.

According to authorities, this collision involved five cars and a motorcycle. Footage shared on social media captured the chaotic aftermath, showing a motorcycle lying on its side on the rightmost lane tightly wedged between two cars, with three other damaged vehicles scattered further ahead.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police quickly deployed to the scene, where two casualties were reported from that side of the highway. A 41-year-old male motorcyclist was found conscious and treated on-site before being evacuated, while an 8-year-old boy, who was a passenger in one of the involved cars, also remained conscious.

Ambulances rushed the motorcyclist to the National University Hospital and the young boy to KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

Directly across the central divider, in the Changi Airport-bound direction of the PIE, a separate but simultaneous collision occurred involving two cars and a motorcycle.

Online video footage from a passing motorist revealed a black compact SUV with severe front-bumper and hood damage. Nearby, a white compact SUV was stopped on the rightmost lane, with a badly damaged motorcycle lying on its side between the vehicles.

Police and SCDF confirmed that the 20-year-old male motorcyclist and his 23-year-old male pillion rider were both conscious when emergency crews arrived. Both men were quickly loaded into ambulances and transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Tragically, the 23-year-old pillion rider succumbed to his severe injuries and passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The double accident triggered a massive emergency turnout. Witnesses documented at least two SCDF ambulances, a fire engine, a rescue tender vehicle, a police cruiser, and a light fire attack vehicle clogging the fast lanes.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) issued immediate alerts to motorists as Lanes 1 and 2 on the Tuas-bound side were cordoned off, forcing heavy weekend traffic to squeeze through a single remaining lane. Rubbernecking on both sides further slowed the flow of vehicles to a crawl until the wreckage could be safely cleared by tow trucks.

Police investigations into the exact causes of both collisions are currently ongoing.
