VHEMBE DISTRICT — Six people, including three South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and two awaiting-trial prisoners, lost their lives following a horrific head-on collision on the R524 Levubu Road in Limpopo's Vhembe District. The devastating crash occurred when a police transport van collided with a civilian vehicle, triggering an immediate emergency response and a formal investigation into culpable homicide.
The fatal crash occurred while a SAPS vehicle from Tshilwavhusiku Police Station was in transit to transport three awaiting-trial prisoners to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou. While navigating the R524 Levubu Road, the police transport collided head-on with a white Mahindra bakkie belonging to Tshisimani Water.
Emergency medical services rushed to the scene, declaring five people deceased upon arrival. A third police officer suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility, but later succumbed to their wounds, bringing the total death toll to six.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and colleagues of those affected as law enforcement agencies began processing the scene.
Among the six victims, the crash claimed the lives of three South African Police Service officers—one male and two female members. The collision also resulted in fatalities among the detainees being transported, killing two male awaiting-trial prisoners, while a third prisoner survived with severe injuries and remains hospitalized under strict police guard. Additionally, the driver of the Tshisimani Water bakkie was killed in the head-on impact.
Senior police management and specialized traffic investigators attended the scene on the R524 to determine the cause of the head-on impact. A case of culpable homicide has been registered at the Makhado Police Station as authorities await formal identification and notification of next of kin. The incident has highlighted growing regional concerns regarding road safety conditions and secure transit protocols along high-density transport routes in Limpopo.
