Tragedy on Ortigas Avenue: Woman Killed, TNVS Rider Critically Injured after SUV Plows into Motorcycle

MANDALUYONG CITY, PHILIPPINES — A routine transport booking ended in horror early Sunday morning, July 12, 2026 along a major metropolitan thoroughfare when an SUV slammed into a motorcycle, killing a female passenger instantly and leaving a Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS) rider fighting for his life.

The violent collision occurred along the eastbound lane of Ortigas Avenue in Barangay Wack-Wack, Mandaluyong City, shutting down traffic for hours as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

According to preliminary reports from the Mandaluyong City Police Station, the incident took place at approximately 3:30 AM on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The female victim, whose identity is being withheld pending the notification of her next of kin, had booked a motorcycle ride to her destination through a popular ride-hailing app.

Investigators stated that the motorcycle was traversing Ortigas Avenue when a fast-moving sports utility vehicle (SUV) trailing behind them failed to slow down, plowing directly into the rear of the two-wheeled vehicle.

The sheer force of the impact threw both the rider and his passenger off the motorcycle. The female passenger sustained catastrophic head and body injuries upon hitting the asphalt and was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving paramedics.

The TNVS rider, identified as 34-year-old Mark Anthony Santos, suffered multiple fractures and severe internal trauma. Emergency medical responders administered first aid at the crash site before rushing him to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Debris from the shattered motorcycle—including helmets, personal belongings, and fragmented vehicle parts—was scattered across a 50-meter radius, illustrating the high velocity of the crash.

The driver of the SUV, who remained at the scene following the collision, was immediately taken into police custody. Authorities are currently conducting breathalyzer and toxicology tests to determine if the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.

The tragedy has sparked renewed outrage among the local TNVS and commuter community online, calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits and harsher penalties for reckless driving along the capital's major avenues, which regularly see high-speed accidents during the late-night and early-morning hours.

Mandaluyong traffic investigators are currently reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from Barangay Wack-Wack and nearby commercial establishments to reconstruct the exact sequence of events leading up to the crash.

The driver of the SUV faces multiple criminal charges, including Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide, Serious Physical Injuries, and Damage to Property under the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines.
