HAFLONG, Assam — A devastating Friday along National Highway 27 in Assam’s hill district of Dima Hasao claimed the lives of two young people and left two others battling critical injuries following two separate traffic accidents.
The dual mishaps occurred at distinct stretches along the major arterial corridor within the district, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to police sources, the two fatal casualties occurred in the initial incident when a motorcycle lost control and collided violently on the highway. Emergency personnel and local bystanders rushed to the scene to assist the victims, but both youths succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the crash.
They were transported to a nearby medical facility, where doctors officially declared them brought dead on arrival. Authorities are working to notify their families while completing necessary formal procedures. Hours apart from the first tragedy, a second serious accident took place on another section of NH-27 within Dima Hasao district. Two additional individuals sustained severe, life-threatening injuries during the collision.
First responders quickly evacuated both survivors to a district hospital, where medical teams are providing intensive care to stabilize their conditions.
Local police have registered cases regarding both incidents and launched comprehensive investigations to determine the precise causes of the crashes. Preliminary assessments point toward potential factors such as over speeding, poor visibility, or loss of vehicular control along the winding highway terrain.
The tragic events have once again raised urgent concerns among residents and commuters regarding road safety and speed enforcement along National Highway 27 through Assam’s mountainous stretches.
In response to the tragic accidents, local community organizations and commuter associations have urged the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and regional traffic authorities to immediately install speed barriers, enhanced night-time illumination, and clearer warning signs along vulnerable curves of NH-27 to prevent future loss of life.
