Tragedy on Lake Kariba: Overloaded Ferry Capsizes, Leaving at Least 15 Dead and Several Missing

HARARE, Zimbabwe — A major search-and-rescue operation is underway on Lake Kariba after an aging, overloaded passenger ferry capsized on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 killing at least 15 people and leaving 27 others missing.

According to Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Unit (CPU), emergency crews managed to rescue 77 survivors, who were transported to a nearby island on the lake as search operations continue. Speedboats and a rescue helicopter were deployed across the vast body of water alongside an underwater recovery team.

The vessel, identified locally as the Mbuya Nehanda, was traveling from the town of Kariba toward Chalala—a routine five-hour journey relied upon by rural and island communities.

Local officials confirmed the ferry had an official carrying capacity of 90 people. However, official ticket sales revealed that at least 114 adult passengers and five crew members were aboard at the time of departure. Authorities expressed grave concern that the total passenger count could be significantly higher, as children below ticketing age are routinely unrecorded.

Witnesses and local officials reported that the vessel encountered harsh weather and strong waves shortly before overturning.

The disaster resulted in 15 confirmed deaths, with 77 people rescued and at least 27 others remaining missing. Although the vessel was rated for a capacity of 90 passengers, it was carrying more than 119 verified individuals in addition to unmetered minors. This severe overloading, combined with strong winds and rough waters, served as the primary cause of the capsizing on Lake Kariba—the world's largest man-made reservoir by volume, which straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The tragedy has sparked growing public anger over maritime transport regulation and safety standards across Zimbabwe's inland waterways.

"We have very hard questions that require honest answers," said Mutsa Murombedzi, a local Member of Parliament who shared video footage of the aging vessel setting off prior to the disaster. "The officials must release the correct number of people who were onboard."

The Civil Protection Unit has formally recommended that the government officially declare the incident a national disaster to mobilize further emergency relief and support for the affected families. Search-and-rescue teams from the Zimbabwe Republic Police and national defense forces remain on scene searching for the missing.
