KUALA LUMPUR — A sudden and violent tree-fall incident along Jalan Tun Razak on Saturday night, July 18, 2026, has claimed the life of a 43-year-old driver and left a family of seven, including an infant, hospitalised.

The freak accident occurred at approximately 10:20 PM near the Singapore High Commission and the United States Embassy. A massive roadside tree unexpectedly uprooted and collapsed, pinning two moving vehicles beneath its immense weight.

According to Dang Wangi OCPD Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam, the fallen tree landed directly on top of two cars carrying a total of eight people. One of the vehicles, a Honda Accord driven by the 43-year-old victim, bore the brunt of the impact and sustained severe structural damage.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 10:11 PM and deployed rescue teams to extricate the severely injured driver, who was trapped inside the crushed cabin. The man sustained major trauma to both arms and severe internal chest bleeding. He was rushed by ambulance to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), where doctors fought to save his life. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 4:00 AM on Sunday, July 19, due to the severity of his injuries.

While the driver of the first vehicle suffered fatal injuries, the occupants of the second vehicle experienced a miraculous escape from physical harm. This second car was carrying a family of seven, which consisted of five adults, a two-year-old child, and a two-month-old infant.

ACP Sazalee confirmed that while physical examinations revealed none of the family members suffered external injuries, all seven were transported to Hospital Kuala Lumpur to be treated for shock and monitored closely given the presence of the young children.

The sudden collapse caused immediate gridlock along Jalan Tun Razak, one of Kuala Lumpur's busiest primary thoroughfares. Large branches completely blocked the lanes, forcing emergency crews to set up temporary diversions.

Personnel from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) arrived shortly after the incident with chainsaws and heavy machinery to cut up the massive trunk and clear away the debris. By midnight, the clearing operations were complete, and both crushed vehicles were successfully towed away to allow the regular flow of traffic to resume.

The incident occurred during a weekend marked by heavy rain and flash floods across the Klang Valley, which led to at least four other reports of fallen trees blocking major roadways. Authorities are urging municipal councils to step up inspections of aged roadside trees along major city corridors to prevent similar tragedies as unpredictable weather patterns persist.
