Tragedy on Hiram’s Highway: Taxi Driver Dead, Two Injured After Head-On KMB Bus Crash

SAI KUNG, HONG KONG — A tragic head-on collision on Hiram’s Highway claimed the life of an elderly taxi driver and left two passengers injured on Saturday evening. The severe crash, which involved an oncoming Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB), forced an emergency rescue operation and triggered significant traffic disruptions in the Sai Kung district.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:40 p.m. on July 4, 2026, along Hiram's Highway near Pak Sha Terrace. According to law enforcement officials, a taxi driven by a 63-year-old man was traveling towards Sai Kung when the vehicle unexpectedly veered across the solid center line and into the oncoming traffic lane.

An oncoming KMB bus, operated by a 24-year-old driver, was unable to avoid the taxi, resulting in a violent, high-speed head-on collision. The force of the impact heavily crushed the front end of the taxi, trapping the driver and his two passengers inside the twisted wreckage.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene following urgent calls from passing motorists. Using specialized cutting tools, rescue crews worked deliberately to free the three individuals trapped inside the cab.

The 63-year-old taxi driver, who sustained extensive and critical injuries, was pulled from the vehicle in an unconscious state. He was rushed under emergency escort to Tseung Kwan O Hospital, where medical staff attempted lifesaving interventions. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was officially certified dead at 8:32 p.m.

Both passengers survived the initial impact and were transported to hospitals while conscious. The 50-year-old male passenger, who suffered shoulder and hand injuries, was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital. The 47-year-old female passenger sustained severe chest trauma and was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Both passengers are reported to be in stable condition. The 24-year-old bus driver did not report any immediate serious injuries.

The collision caused significant tailbacks along Hiram's Highway—a critical arterial route connecting Sai Kung with the rest of Kowloon—as emergency crews worked to clear the extensive debris field and recover the damaged vehicles.

The Special Investigation Team of Traffic for Kowloon East has taken over the case to determine what caused the taxi to cross into oncoming traffic, looking into factors such as potential mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or sudden medical episodes. Authorities have publicly urged any witnesses or motorists with dash cam footage of the incident to contact investigating officers to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
