Tragedy on Desert Highway: 5 Dead, 17 Injured in Fatal Jordan Bus Crash

AMMAN, Jordan — A horrific traffic accident along Jordan’s primary Desert Highway left five people dead and 17 others injured on Thursday, September 10, 2026 after a passenger bus collided with a heavy freight truck and overturned.

The fatal crash occurred near the Qatrana area in Karak Governorate, roughly 90 kilometers south of the capital city of Amman. According to preliminary reports from the Public Security Directorate (PSD), the bus was traveling north toward Amman along a stretch of the highway currently undergoing routine road maintenance when the driver reportedly lost control, swerved into the adjacent lane, and sideswiped an oncoming trailer before veering off the tarmac.

Civil Defense Department (CDD) rescue teams and traffic police patrols were dispatched immediately to the scene. Emergency crews worked quickly to extract passengers pinned inside the wreckage, deploying specialized hydraulic cutting equipment to clear crushed metal panels before treating the injured on site.

Tragically, five individuals were pronounced dead at the scene due to severe traumatic injuries. The 17 injured victims were transported by fleet ambulances to Prince Ali bin Al Hussein Military Hospital and Karak Government Hospital, where three remain in critical condition with intensive care monitoring.

Jordanian traffic authorities temporarily restricted movement along the Desert Highway to facilitate clearance operations, clear debris, and towing the damaged vehicles. A specialized engineering committee from the Highway Patrol Department has launched an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events, examining potential contributing factors including driver fatigue, excessive speed, and traffic conditions around the highway work zone.

The incident has renewed public scrutiny over safety protocols along the Desert Highway, a crucial commercial vein connecting southern industrial hubs to the capital that has long been notorious for severe collisions during infrastructure upgrades. In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing announced an immediate review of traffic diversions and signage along active construction segments to prevent similar fatal incidents as investigators finalize their collision reconstruction report.
