ADELANTO, CA — A quiet weekend night transformed into an absolute nightmare in San Bernardino County when a single-vehicle rollover crash involving eight teenagers left one dead and multiple others hospitalized.
The catastrophic collision occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 7, 2026, at approximately 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Rancho Road and Lilac Road in the city of Adelanto.
According to an official news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, all eight teenagers were crammed inside a 2013 Dodge Charger—a sedan designed to safely seat only five passengers.
Investigators determined that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Rancho Road at an "excessive speed". As the vehicle approached the intersection of Lilac Road, the driver lost control of the speeding sedan. The car violently careened off the pavement, rolling over multiple times before coming to a rest on its side.
The force of the impact was so severe that at least one of the young occupants was completely ejected from the vehicle as it rolled. First responders from the Adelanto Sheriff's Station, San Bernardino County Fire, and American Medical Response rushed to the rural intersection. Paramedics faced a chaotic scene as they worked frantically to treat the heavily injured teenagers scattered near the mangled wreckage.
Six of the occupants were rushed to nearby trauma centers with a range of severe, undisclosed injuries. A seventh occupant miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.
Tragically, one passenger—identified by the San Bernardino County Coroner's Department as 16-year-old Robert Castro of Victorville—succumbed to his severe injuries after being transported to the hospital. Authorities had initially reported the deceased victim's age as 17 before officially verifying his identity.
"This is a heartbreaking reminder of the immense dangers of excessive speeding and vehicle overcrowding," a local official noted following the incident.
Following the deadly crash, the intersection was completely shut down to traffic for approximately six hours. Investigators from the sheriff's department's Regional Major Accident Investigative Team (M.A.I.T.) assumed control of the scene, meticulously mapping tire marks, documenting evidence, and conducting preliminary witness interviews.
Officials have not yet stated whether the underage driver will face criminal charges, or if factors beyond excessive speed contributed to the loss of control. The investigation remains highly active.
