Tragedy Off Davao City: Man Dies After Being Thrown From Boat Battered by Strong Winds

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — A peaceful maritime journey turned into a fatal disaster on Sunday, June 14, 2026 when a passenger died after being thrown overboard from a motorized watercraft battered by sudden, fierce winds and turbulent waves off the coast of Davao City.

The incident occurred during a period of volatile regional weather, highlighting the escalating dangers faced by local seafarers and coastal commuters navigating the area’s open waters.

According to initial reports from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Davao District, the vessel was traversing its usual route when it was unexpectedly intercepted by localized gale-force winds and rough swells.

Witnesses aboard stated that the captain attempted to stabilize the watercraft as massive waves slammed into its hull. The violent pitching and rolling of the boat caught passengers off guard. The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending the notification of his immediate family, lost his footing during a severe lurch and was violently thrown over the side into the churning sea.

The boat's crew and nearby local fishermen immediately initiated an emergency search-and-rescue effort, which was quickly joined by responding PCG maritime units.

After an intense race against time and deteriorating sea conditions, rescuers managed to locate and pull the unresponsive man from the water. Emergency medical personnel performed CPR on the victim as he was rushed back to the pier, but after being immediately transferred to a nearby hospital, attending physicians ultimately pronounced him dead due to drowning and severe water inhalation.

The remaining passengers and crew members arrived safely back at port, shaken but physically unharmed.

In the wake of the tragedy, naval and coast guard authorities have issued strict reminders to all local boat operators, particularly those piloting smaller motorized outriggers (bangkas). Motorists and fishermen are urged to strictly monitor weather advisories and avoid venturing out into open waters when sudden localized squalls are forecast.

An investigation is currently underway to determine whether the vessel was carrying standard life jackets and if all safety protocols were actively enforced at the time of the incident.
