Tragedy Near Sanctuary: Wild Buffalo Attack Claims Life of Assam Man

NAGAON, ASSAM — In a tragic reminder of the escalating human-wildlife conflict along Assam's sanctuary borders, a man died after being attacked by a stray wild buffalo near the Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary.

The deceased has been identified as Shafikul Islam, a local resident who was working in a jute field located on a river island (char) in Assam’s Nagaon district when the encounter occurred.

According to local eyewitnesses and forest officials, the wild buffalo had strayed out from the protected boundaries of the nearby Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary in search of food. Spotting Islam in the field, the animal aggressively charged, inflicting severe injuries and leaving him bleeding profusely.

The victim's critical condition was further compounded by the severe lack of basic transport infrastructure in the remote riverine region. Distressed locals quickly gathered and placed Islam on a makeshift stretcher, manually carrying him over a long distance across difficult terrain before reaching a road accessible by motor vehicles.

Despite their race against time, Islam succumbed to his injuries on the way to the nearest medical facility due to heavy blood loss.

The incident has sparked concern among local residents who frequently commute and farm near the sanctuary buffer zone. Both the Assam Forest Department and local police officials have launched an investigation into the attack to track the movements of the wild buffalo and assess safety measures.

Communities residing on the fringes of Assam’s protected natural habitats continue to face frequent wildlife incursions, bringing the urgent need for better rural infrastructure, medical access, and conflict-mitigation strategies back into sharp focus.

In response to the tragedy, angry villagers gathered to demand immediate compensation for Islam’s surviving family and the swift deployment of forest patrols equipped to manage straying wildlife. Environmentalists and wildlife experts have also weighed in, emphasizing that habitat fragmentation, shrinking buffer zones, and seasonal flooding regularly force large mammals out of protected sanctuaries into agricultural areas, making early-warning systems and stronger community fencing vital to preventing future fatalities.
