SUFFOLK PARK, NSW — A devastating head-on collision involving three vehicles near a popular Australian coastal tourism hub has left two people dead and a third fighting for her life in a critical condition.
Emergency services rushed to the scene along Broken Head Road in Suffolk Park, located just south of the popular holiday destination Byron Bay in northern New South Wales, following urgent calls around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 31, 2026.
Upon arrival, first responders were met with severe wreckage across the roadway. New South Wales Police confirmed that the drivers of two separate vehicles involved in the crash died at the scene.
The crash tragically claimed the lives of two drivers at the scene. A female driver believed to be in her 50s succumbed to her injuries before emergency personnel could extract her from the first vehicle. Meanwhile, the driver of the second vehicle, a man believed to be in his 60s, was also declared deceased by first responders upon their arrival.
A female passenger in her 60s, traveling inside the second vehicle, suffered extensive injuries. Intensive care paramedics provided emergency treatment at the crash site before she was airlifted via rescue helicopter to Gold Coast University Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Occupants inside the third vehicle involved in the pileup managed to escape without physical injuries. Crash Investigation Unit officers cordoned off the area to begin piecing together the events leading up to the multi-vehicle collision. Specialist forensic officers are examining road conditions, vehicle trajectories, and potential mechanical issues.
Broken Head Road was closed in both directions for several hours following the crash, causing major traffic delays for weekend holidaymakers and local residents in the Byron Shire region. Local authorities implemented detours while emergency teams worked to clear the debris.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the collision or who has relevant dashcam footage from Broken Head Road around the time of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
