Tragedy Near Berlin: 2 Dead in Violent School Incident in Gosen-Neu Zittau

GOSEN-NEU ZITTAU, Germany — A quiet afternoon turned into a scene of devastating violence on Thursday, August 27, 2026 when a knife attack at a school campus in Gosen-Neu Zittau left two people dead. Authorities have detained a 19-year-old male suspect in connection with the killings, which officials describe as a targeted act rather than a random rampage.

Emergency services rushed to the Docemus private school campus southeast of Berlin around 1:45 p.m. local time following urgent reports of a violent assault. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two victims suffering from severe fatal injuries.

The deceased have been identified as an 18-year-old female secondary school student and a 30-year-old male after-school care worker. Investigators report that the care worker was killed while courageously attempting to intervene and stop the assailant during the attack.

The 19-year-old suspect, identified as the female victim’s former boyfriend, was arrested by police directly at the scene.

"We are securing the crime scene and evaluating all evidence," local police confirmed in a statement. Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public or the surrounding area, characterizing the incident as stemming from a personal relationship rather than an indiscriminate attack on the school.

The municipality of roughly 3,500 residents has been left in shock. Crisis intervention teams were immediately deployed to the campus to provide psychological support to students, teachers, and staff present during the incident.

The school campus will remain closed as forensic experts from the Brandenburg State Criminal Police (LKA) process the scene and prosecutors move forward with formal murder charges. Local leaders expressed profound grief over the tragedy, with Brandenburg officials praising the brave action of the staff member who lost his life attempting to save others.

In the wake of the tragedy, community members and students have begun gathering outside the school gates to lay flowers, light candles, and leave written tributes in honor of the victims. State education authorities announced that counseling services will remain available throughout the weekend for all affected families, while regional leaders call for a broader discussion on school security measures and domestic violence prevention.
