FOGARS DE MONTCLÚS, Spain — A total of 83 people were evaluated for injuries after a passenger bus veered off a winding mountain road and plunged 20 meters (approx. 65 feet) down a steep embankment near Barcelona on Sunday afternoon, October 25, 2026.
The incident occurred along the BV-5114 highway in the municipality of Fogars de Montclús, situated near the Montseny Natural Park northeast of Barcelona.
Following at least 25 urgent 911 calls, emergency services rapidly mobilized to the remote location. Emergency crews dispatched 23 ambulances, two medical helicopters, three joint firefighter-medical intervention units, and three specialized psychological support teams.
Of the 83 individuals treated or evaluated at the scene, Catalan medical emergency services confirmed that seven people suffered serious injuries, 18 sustained moderately severe injuries, and 58 received care for minor injuries. Multiple victims were transferred to regional hospitals in Granollers, Girona, and Barcelona.
Due to the extreme incline of the ravine, rescue crews worked tirelessly using specialized gear and ground units to climb down and access the overturned vehicle.
Olga Pané, Health Minister of the Generalitat of Catalonia, stated that emergency crews conducted thorough grid searches of the surrounding forest area. The Catalan Corps of Firefighters deployed specialized search-and-rescue units, thermal drones, and sniffer dogs overnight to ensure no passengers were thrown from the bus or left unaccounted for in the dense terrain. No fatalities have been reported.
The vehicle involved was a public line bus (Route 573) operated by local transport company Sagalés, connecting the Fogars de Montclús visitor center to Santa Fe del Montseny.
In an official statement, Sagalés confirmed the incident and expressed full cooperation with authorities: "Sagalés confirms that a bus on line 573 was involved in an accident on the BV-5114 road. From the very first moment, we have been collaborating with emergency services and competent authorities to clarify the circumstances."
Regional police (Mossos d'Esquadra) closed the BV-5114 in both directions while crash reconstruction specialists examined the scene to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the road. Heavy equipment is scheduled to raise the wreckage from the ravine once initial investigations conclude.
