TIPTON, WEST MIDLANDS — A quiet evening turned into a scene of utter devastation when a vehicle lost control and plowed directly into a busy Chinese takeaway, killing one man and leaving six others—including four young children—hospitalized with severe injuries.
The horrific incident has triggered a massive emergency response from West Midlands Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service, and local fire crews, locking down the heart of the Tipton residential area.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:15 PM on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, a time when families were actively picking up dinner from the popular local establishment. According to witnesses, an out-of-control vehicle mounted the pavement at high speed, completely shattering the takeaway's glass storefront and breaching the interior counter where customers were waiting.
The impact caused immediate structural collapse near the entrance, trapping several people beneath heavy debris and the vehicle itself.
"It was like a bomb went off," said a nearby shopkeeper who rushed to the scene after hearing the crash. "There was a massive crunch of metal and glass, followed by screaming. Everyone in the street ran over to try and pull the bricks away before the emergency services arrived."
First responders arrived within minutes to find a highly complex and chaotic scene. Firefighters from the West Midlands Fire Service worked quickly to stabilize the building's damaged storefront to prevent a secondary collapse while cutting team members extracted those trapped inside.
Paramedics treated multiple casualties on the pavement. Despite the best efforts of emergency medical personnel, a male pedestrian inside the shop was pronounced dead at the scene from catastrophic injuries.
Among the six people rushed to local trauma centers were four children, who were reportedly waiting with their families when the vehicle struck. Two of the children are currently in critical condition at Birmingham Children's Hospital. The driver of the vehicle, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was treated at the scene before being taken into police custody.
West Midlands Police have cordoned off a wide perimeter around the high street as collision reconstruction teams map out the scene. The vehicle has been removed for forensic mechanical examination to determine if a sudden technical failure contributed to the disaster.
Local authorities are currently appealing to the public for any dash cam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage captured in the moments leading up to the crash.
"This is a truly tragic incident that has deeply affected the local Tipton community," a West Midlands Police spokesperson stated. "Our specialized family liaison officers are supporting those affected. A full criminal investigation is underway to establish exactly how this vehicle came to mount the curb and enter the premises."
The road is expected to remain closed well into the morning as structural engineers assess whether the remaining building is safe.
