MARDAN, Pakistan — A routine training mission ended in tragedy on Monday, June 15, 2026 after a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) trainer aircraft crashed in the Mardan district of the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing both military pilots on board. The incident also resulted in injuries to civilians on the ground.
The aircraft was conducting a routine training sortie when it went down in a populated area along Katlang Road.
The military's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), officially identified the two deceased officers as Flight Lieutenant Muhammad Qasim Abdullah of the Pakistan Air Force and Lieutenant Taha Abbasi of the Pakistan Navy.
Both officers, who were co-piloting the joint training flight, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Because the aircraft crashed in a populated area, the wreckage caused minor destruction and injuries on the ground. Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and local security sources confirmed that three civilians passing through the area were injured in the impact.
Rescue and emergency services rushed to the crash site immediately to cordon off Katlang Road, launch relief operations, and transport the injured civilians to the Mardan Medical Complex for treatment.
The exact mechanical or environmental cause of the crash remains unknown. Air Headquarters in Islamabad has formed a formal board of inquiry to launch an investigation into the technical factors leading up to the crash. Military officials have not yet publicly disclosed the specific model or type of trainer jet involved.
"A board of inquiry has been constituted by Air Headquarters to ascertain the cause of the accident," the ISPR said in a brief press release.
The tragic loss has drawn widespread mourning across Pakistan's civilian and military leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued separate statements paying tribute to the pilots' dedication and offering their deep condolences to the bereaved families.
Chief of Defense Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, alongside Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu and other service chiefs, expressed deep grief over the loss of "brave sons who laid down their lives in defense of the country".
