SRINAGAR — A profound wave of grief has swept through the Naidkadal area of downtown Srinagar after a 65-year-old woman was tragically electrocuted on Monday, June 22, 2026. The incident, occurring amidst heavy downpours, has sharply renewed local anxieties regarding public infrastructure safety during inclement weather.

The victim has been identified as Shamima Makhdoomi, a resident of Naidkadal and wife of Ghulam Nabi.

According to local officials, the tragedy unfolded during a spell of intense rainfall that had left many streets slick and waterlogged. While navigating the neighborhood, Shamima accidentally came into contact with a live electric current running through a street pole.

The pole had reportedly become charged due to a technical fault or damaged wiring exposed by the wet conditions.

The severe shock immediately caused her to collapse, leaving her critically injured on the street. Nearby residents rushed to her aid as soon as they realized what had happened. Despite the chaotic weather conditions, locals managed to carefully detach her from the hazard and immediately evacuated her to the nearest hospital.

The effort to save her life was ultimately cut short. Upon arrival at the medical facility, attending physicians examined Shamima and declared her brought dead. The immense current from the high-voltage exposure proved fatal before any emergency medical interventions could be administered. The news of her sudden and agonizing death brought a cloud of mourning over the historic Naidkadal locality, with neighbors assembling to console the devastated family.

Following the hospital's report, local authorities moved swiftly to secure the scene. A police spokesperson confirmed that the force has officially taken cognizance of the tragic incident.
