Tragedy in the Neighborhood: Tricycle Driver Stabbed 17 Times with Kitchen Knife; Suspect Arrested

RODRIGUEZ, RIZAL: A quiet morning turned into a scene of horrific violence when a 42-year-old tricycle driver was brutally stabbed to death inside his own home by his neighbor on Tuesday morning, July 7, 2026.

The victim, identified as Melvin Gutierrez, a resident of Barangay Geronimo, succumbed to 17 stab wounds inflicted with a kitchen knife.

According to investigators from the Rodriguez Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred at around 8:30 AM. Gutierrez was reportedly sleeping inside his house when his 29-year-old neighbor, identified by the alias "Jayson," entered the premises without permission.

Without warning or provocation, the suspect drew a 23-centimeter kitchen knife and launched a relentless assault on the defenseless victim. "The suspect suddenly entered the residence and repeatedly stabbed the sleeping victim, leaving him with no opportunity to defend himself," local authorities noted in their initial report.

Alerted by the commotion, neighbors immediately contacted barangay officials and local emergency teams for assistance. Gutierrez was rushed to the H-Vill Hospital in neighboring Barangay Manggahan; however, attending medical staff declared him dead on arrival due to the severity and sheer number of his wounds.

Following the attack, police forces launched an immediate follow-up operation in Barangay Geronimo, Rodriguez, Rizal that led to the swift arrest of the suspect, a 29-year-old neighbor known as alias "Jayson." During the operation, authorities recovered the weapon used in the crime—a 23-centimeter kitchen knife. The victim was formally identified as Melvin Gutierrez, a 42-year-old local tricycle driver.

The suspect is currently held in custody at the Rodriguez Municipal Police Station as investigators work to determine the exact motive behind the brutal slaying. Authorities are preparing to file formal homicide charges against him.
