Tragedy in the Desert: Deadliest Air Strike on Border Gold Mine Claims 72 Lives

KHARTOUM — At least 72 civilian miners were killed and more than 50 injured on Saturday, October 11, 2026 in a devastating air strike on a remote gold mine near the border between Sudan and Egypt. The attack, which struck an artisanal mining site in a disputed frontier zone, marks one of the deadliest single incidents along the border region since Sudan's civil conflict erupted.

According to preliminary statements from Emergency Lawyers, a Sudanese human rights legal organization monitoring violence in the country, a military aircraft carried out repeated strikes on the site around 8:00 a.m. local time. Survivors described scenes of absolute panic as hundreds of workers scattered into the surrounding mountains to escape the bombardment.

"A jet appeared overhead and struck five times," said Abdelaziz Youssef, a survivor who was working at the mine when the attack began. "Many people were killed instantly. We ran up the mountain terrified of another strike".

Another survivor, Sharaf Ali, noted that thousands of informal gold miners work across the vast, arid terrain. "After the strike, people scattered in all directions—some fled toward the nearby Al-Ansary market, while others ran into the desert. Because everyone dispersed, no one immediately knew how many were left behind".

Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by the extreme isolation of the borderland, situated hours away from major urban centers and medical facilities. Local medical networks warned that the casualty count could rise further, as dozens of wounded miners remain stranded in critical condition with limited access to emergency care.

The targeted region—located south of the disputed Halayeb Triangle east of the Nile—has long been a hotspot for informal gold prospecting, cross-border trade, and illicit transit. The ongoing civil war in Sudan has driven thousands of displaced civilians into small-scale gold mining as one of the few remaining means of survival amidst widespread economic collapse.

Rights groups have accused foreign aircraft of launching the raid, though independent verification remains ongoing and regional governments have yet to issue detailed official statements regarding responsibility for the strike.

Humanitarian groups are calling for an immediate international investigation into the targeting of civilian workers and urging regional authorities to allow medical corridors into the remote mining district.
