THE BRONX, N.Y. — A horrific multi-vehicle collision transformed a busy intersection in the Allerton neighborhood into a scene of chaotic tragedy on Friday evening, October 9, 2026 leaving two women dead and several others injured.
According to the New York City Police Department, the incident unfolded around 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of Allerton and Holland Avenues. An 81-year-old driver behind the wheel of a white Mercedes-Benz was heading westbound when he was unable to bring the vehicle to a stop as he approached traffic.
The sedan careened through the crosswalk, striking pedestrians before slamming into vehicles stopped at the light. The initial impact triggered a devastating chain reaction, sending two cars rear-ending two additional vehicles caught in the intersection.
Four women in total were struck in the crosswalk and rushed by emergency responders to nearby Jacobi Hospital. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival, while an 84-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
A total of seven other individuals—occupants of the vehicles involved in the chain reaction as well as the driver of the Mercedes—were transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation. Authorities reported that all six vehicle occupants and the 81-year-old driver were listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Eyewitnesses described a chilling scene as the sedan plowed through the busy crosswalk, with the force of the collision sending victims flying and shattering the windshields of nearby cars. Surrounding streets were immediately cordoned off by police and emergency crews late into the night while collision reconstruction teams systematically processed the scene and reviewed local surveillance footage.
All drivers involved remained at the scene following the crash. No arrests have been made as the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad continues to investigate the exact cause of the crash.
