Tragedy in the Alps: Several Dead, Multiple Injured in Swiss Bus Crash Near Susch

SUSCH, Switzerland — A devastating tour bus crash near the village of Susch in eastern Switzerland left five people dead and dozens injured after the vehicle veered off a mountain road and overturned.

The incident occurred late on Thursday afternoon, September 10, 2026 around 4:45 p.m. local time along the main road connecting the Alpine villages of Zernez and Susch in the canton of Graubünden.

The bus, carrying 45 Dutch nationals on an organized tour, struck a safety barrier in a single-lane construction section before careening off the roadway and coming to rest on its side down an embankment.

Swiss emergency services mounted a massive rescue response, dispatching 13 ground ambulance crews and seven rescue helicopters—including teams from Rega, Alpine Air Ambulance, and Heli Austria—to airlift critical casualties to surrounding regional hospitals.

The Graubünden Cantonal Police confirmed that five passengers died from their injuries at the scene. Another 40 individuals sustained injuries of varying severity, with three victims reported to be in critical condition. Emergency responders worked throughout the night, using power saws and heavy machinery to extract trapped passengers from the crushed frame of the coach.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin offered his condolences on social media, expressing shock at the tragedy and promising a thorough investigation alongside local prosecutors to determine the exact cause of the crash. Early findings suggest no other vehicles were involved. Dutch officials and representatives from the tour agency have dispatched crisis response teams to the area to assist survivors and support local authorities.

By Friday morning, recovery crews successfully hoisted the wreckage from the ravine using heavy-duty cranes, allowing forensic investigators to begin examining the vehicle’s mechanical systems and onboard tachograph. The road between Zernez and Susch remains temporarily closed to traffic as technical experts assess damage to the barrier and work to reconstruct the final moments leading up to the disaster.
