TANK, Pakistan — Unidentified armed assailants targeted a traffic police mobile patrolling unit in the Wazirabad area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tank district on Monday, September 28, 2026 leaving three traffic police personnel dead and three others wounded in a brazen daytime attack.
The victims were identified as Constable Gul Amin, Constable Saleem Shah, and police driver Fayyaz. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Asmatullah, who was in-charge of the traffic unit, sustained severe injuries alongside two passersby who were caught in the crossfire. All three injured individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment.
According to initial reports from District Police Officer (DPO) Abdul Samad Khan, the gunmen opened fire on the patrol vehicle as it moved through the Wazirabad Bazaar area. Following the shooting, the assailants hijacked the official police van and fled the scene.
A heavy contingent of police and security personnel quickly arrived at the site, cordoning off the area and launching a high-alert search operation across the district. Security forces later located and recovered the stolen police vehicle in the nearby Grah Budha area, though the attackers remain at large.
The ambush has drawn widespread condemnation from provincial and federal officials amid a surge in militant targeted attacks against law enforcement across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
High-level government officials issued strong condemnations following the incident, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressing deep grief over the martyrdom of the officers. Governor Kundi directed senior health officials to ensure top-tier medical care for the injured while demanding a comprehensive report from regional police authorities. Echoing these sentiments, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi paid tribute to the fallen personnel and strongly condemned the terror attack, reaffirming the government's firm commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.
An investigation into the attack is ongoing as security forces continue sweep operations throughout the region.
