Tragedy in Sydney's South: Triple Fatality After Devastating Sans Souci Crash

SYDNEY — A quiet Saturday morning in Sydney’s south turned into a scene of absolute devastation when a high-speed collision in Sans Souci claimed the lives of three people. The tragedy unfolded shortly after police had attended a home in Gymea Bay to conduct a welfare check.

At approximately 12:25 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, officers from the Sutherland Shire Police Area Command were called to a residence on Second Avenue in Gymea Bay following reports of a mental health concern.

Upon their arrival, officers attempted to engage with a 42-year-old man at the property. However, before police could speak with him, the man fled the scene in a white Audi.

Tragically, only a short time later, emergency services were alerted to a catastrophic two-vehicle crash on the southbound lanes of Rocky Point Road in Sans Souci, approximately 7 to 13 kilometers away. According to New South Wales Police, the white Audi was traveling at "considerable speed" when it struck a concrete barrier, rolled, and landed on top of a blue Toyota sedan.

The force of the impact was immense. The 42-year-old driver of the Audi was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the blue Toyota—a driver and a passenger—also lost their lives instantly. Their identities have yet to be formally released by authorities.

Detective Acting Superintendent Graham Hibbs described the incident as a "horrific scene." He noted that there were very few vehicles on the road at that hour, adding, "It is extremely unlucky for the people involved."

Between 20 and 40 bystanders reportedly rushed to the site of the wreckage to attempt to assist when one of the vehicles caught fire.

A crime scene was immediately established at the site, with traffic diversions put in place to allow for an extensive forensic examination. Specialist officers from the Crash Investigations Unit are currently working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the involvement of drugs and alcohol as a potential factor in the crash.

"We really feel for the families of all three persons who were involved in this incident and their loved ones," Superintendent Hibbs said during a media briefing.
