Tragedy in Stade: Six Dead After Custody Dispute Sparks Brutal Mass Shooting at German Youth Facility

STADE, Germany — A horrific scene unfolded on Monday afternoon, June 29, 206 in the northern German town of Stade after a bitter custody dispute erupted into a brutal mass shooting at a local child and youth welfare facility, leaving six people dead.

The attack, which took place at a facility on Dankersstraße near Hamburg, ranks as one of the country's deadliest mass shootings in recent years. Authorities confirmed that all six victims—four women and two men—were employees of the shelter or its affiliates and were shot in a cold-blooded and violent manner inside the building.

According to investigators and regional security officials, the suspected gunman, identified as a 45-year-old German citizen with Turkish roots, had arrived at the facility for a scheduled appointment to discuss custody arrangements for his three-month-old daughter. Both the infant and her mother were present at the location during the incident but were miraculously unharmed by the gunfire.

“The perpetrator had an appointment today, along with many of the victims, to discuss future custody arrangements,” stated Kathrin Schuol, the police chief for Lüneburg, who is leading the investigation.

Instead of a resolution, the meeting ended in a bloodbath. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to find four people dead on arrival. A fifth person died shortly after at the scene, while a sixth victim succumbed to critical wounds after being rushed to a nearby hospital. A seventh person was wounded in the attack but is reported to be in stable condition.

Following the shooting, the suspect attempted to flee the scene in a silver Mercedes driven by a 55-year-old woman believed to have close ties to the gunman's family.

Witnesses alerted authorities to the fleeing vehicle, prompting a swift and dynamic police pursuit. Officers fired at least 15 shots to disable the vehicle, blowing out its back tire and bringing the car to an abrupt halt on a tree-lined residential street. Armed police immediately surrounded the vehicle, ordering the suspect and the driver out at gunpoint before detaining them. A total of three individuals have since been held in connection with the operation.

Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister, Daniela Behrens, condemned the act during a press conference, calling it an "extremely violent crime in cold blood" born out of a private tragedy. Local police explicitly clarified that the incident did not have a political, extremist, or terrorist background, nor was it being classified as a femicide, but rather an extended family tragedy.

The facility on Dankersstraße, which provides temporary accommodation and support systems for pregnant women and young mothers, was heavily cordoned off as forensic experts in white protective suits combed the cobblestone streets for evidence. Pastoral care workers have arrived on site to provide psychological support to the survivors and residents.

Carsten Brokelmann, a local official speaking on behalf of Stade's administration, offered deep condolences to the victims and their loved ones, thanking emergency services for their rapid response in containing what was a highly volatile and chaotic situation.
