KARAK, Jordan — At least seven people were killed and several others critically injured after a gunman opened fire inside a local church in Jordan’s southern Karak governorate during a gathering on Friday. Security forces responded immediately to the scene, neutralizing the assailant and launching a comprehensive security operation across the surrounding area.
According to preliminary reports from Jordanian security officials, the shooter entered the church compound in the afternoon before discharging a firearm at worshipers and church staff. Panic ensued as occupants sought cover inside the building while local residents notified emergency services.
Civil Defense medical units quickly arrived at the scene, establishing a triage center outside the sanctuary to care for victims and providing critical care under heavy security protocols before transporting the injured to nearby regional hospitals. At least seven individuals were pronounced dead at the scene or shortly after arrival at nearby medical facilities, while multiple other victims sustained severe gunshot wounds, with hospital administrators confirming that several patients remain in critical condition undergoing emergency surgery.
Armed security units quickly surrounded the building, engaging the attacker during a standoff before neutralizing the threat.
Following the incident, local authorities cordoned off the entire neighborhood in Karak and established heightened security checkpoints on key access roads throughout the governorate. Specialized forensic and counter-terrorism teams were deployed to search the church premises and inspect vehicles in the immediate vicinity for secondary hazards or explosive devices.
Government officials condemned the violent act, expressing deep condolences to the families of the victims and reassuring the public that stability and public safety remain top priorities. Security agencies have opened a thorough investigation into the shooter's identity, background, and motives to determine if the attack was linked to broader network operations. Additional police and military units remain stationed at public gathering sites across southern Jordan to ensure order and security.
