Tragedy in South Kordofan: Deadly Rebel Attack Leaves At Least 5 Dead

DILLING, Sudan — Violence has once again shattered the fragile stability of Sudan’s South Kordofan state on Saturday, September 5, 2026 after a deadly artillery strike by a rebel alliance left at least five civilians dead, including a young child.

The early morning assault targeted residential neighborhoods in the city of Dilling, hitting the southern and western districts. Local medical monitors confirmed that multiple civilians sustained severe injuries as shells tore through homes and public facilities.

The Sudanese Doctors Network, a volunteer group tracking casualty across the country, attributed the strike to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). Led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, the armed faction operates in alignment with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Medical observers strongly condemned the shelling, calling it a "clear violation of international humanitarian law" that deliberately put non-combatants in harm's way.

The city of Dilling, South Kordofan's second-largest urban center, has long stood at the eye of the storm. Having endured a near two-year siege by joint RSF and SPLM-N forces, the city saw a brief reprieve when the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reopened major supply lines.

However, the lifting of the blockade has failed to stem the bloodshed. In recent months, South Kordofan has re-emerged as a primary battleground in the broader Sudanese conflict that first erupted in April 2023.

As clashes intensify between government troops and the RSF-rebel coalition, local humanitarian organizations warn that civilian infrastructure is increasingly bearing the brunt of long-range bombardments, driving fresh waves of displacement across the region.

Humanitarian conditions in Dilling have rapidly deteriorated as aid agencies struggle to deliver medical supplies and clean water to affected neighborhoods. Local hospitals, already operating under severe resource constraints, report being overwhelmed by the sudden influx of blast victims. Community leaders are calling for an immediate cease-fire to allow emergency crews to rescue survivors trapped under rubble and establish safe evacuation corridors for fleeing families.
