A routine call transformed into a deadly shootout near Southeast Park in Columbia, South Carolina, leaving 29-year-old Police Officer Christopher DeLong killed in the line of duty, a fellow officer injured, and the suspect dead.
The incident began around 9:30 a.m. when Columbia police received a domestic dispute call from a woman reporting that a man was destroying property at her home in violation of a restraining order. Officer DeLong responded to the residence and gathered a description of the suspect and his vehicle after learning he had left the scene.
Roughly an hour later, DeLong spotted a suspicious individual near a vehicle matching the description near Southeast Park and called for backup. Officer David Dymock arrived on scene to assist. Within minutes, gunfire erupted, and Dymock radioed to dispatch that both officers had been hit and the suspect was down.
Officer DeLong, a two-year veteran of the Columbia Police Department, was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind his wife and two young children. Officer Dymock suffered gunshot wounds and remains in stable condition.
Columbia Police Chief W.H. "Skip" Holbrook expressed profound grief during an emotional press conference. DeLong's wife paid tribute online, describing her husband as "the best dad to our babies" following an afternoon procession of law enforcement vehicles escorting the fallen officer.
Police identified the deceased suspect as 33-year-old Adam Tyler Dowdy, who had a lengthy criminal record spanning multiple states. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the official investigation into the shooting.
In response to the tragedy, state and local officials reiterated the extreme unpredictable dangers officers face daily when responding to domestic dispute calls, which statistically account for some of the highest rates of violence against law enforcement personnel. Chief Holbrook emphasized that SLED investigators are meticulously analyzing ballistics, radio logs, and body-worn camera footage to construct a precise timeline of the shootout. The findings of the comprehensive investigation will be turned over to the 5th Circuit Solicitor's Office upon completion.
