Tragedy in Simi Valley: One Dead, Five Injured After Tesla Plows Into Cafe Patio

SIMI VALLEY, California — A quiet afternoon at a busy suburban shopping center shattered into chaos when an electric vehicle veered out of control and plowed directly into an outdoor dining area, killing a pedestrian and injuring five others.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026 at the Urbane Cafe, located in a Target shopping plaza near Tierra Rejada and Madera roads.

According to the Simi Valley Police Department, a white Tesla left the travel lane of the parking lot and accelerated toward the restaurant's outdoor seating area. A 79-year-old woman from Agoura Hills was walking on the sidewalk directly in front of the cafe when the vehicle struck her.

Emergency calls reported that the victim had become trapped beneath the wreckage. Ventura County Fire Department personnel rushed to the scene, but the woman was tragically pronounced dead at the location.

Aerial footage captured by local news outlets showed the white Tesla deeply embedded under the restaurant's outdoor patio awning. The vehicle sustained severe front-end damage, its airbags deployed, and it sat surrounded by a debris field of smashed metal chairs and shattered dining tables.

While the impact proved fatal for the pedestrian, the five other people involved suffered minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Tesla was an elderly woman who was transported to a local hospital complaining of minor pain in her arm or wrist.

Four young children were also passengers inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. First responders noted the presence of car seats inside the vehicle's cabin. One child was taken to a local medical center by a family member purely as a precaution, while the other three juveniles were picked up safely by relatives at the active scene.

Simi Valley building inspectors red-tagged the Urbane Cafe on Monday evening due to the visible structural damage caused by the heavy vehicle impact, closing the business until a comprehensive safety assessment can be completed.

Traffic investigators and forensic teams cordoned off a large section of the commercial parking lot as they began analyzing the site. "We're still trying to determine what actually caused that to happen," stated Simi Valley Police Sergeant Rick Morton, noting that teams are looking closely at the vehicle's speed and the driver's control.

The ongoing investigation will assess all variables, including potential driver impairment, distracted driving, or sudden medical emergencies. Because the vehicle involved was a Tesla, authorities are also reviewing data to see if any automated driver-assistance technology or Autopilot systems were engaged at the moment of the crash.
