Tragedy in Shangla: Six Children Killed in Devastating Roof Collapse

SHANGLA, Pakistan — A profound tragedy has struck the Rahimabad Bassi area of Alpuri tehsil in the Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where six children from the same family lost their lives early on Tuesday morning, June 2, 2026, following the sudden collapse of a mud house roof.

The structural failure occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning while the family was asleep. Without warning, the heavy roof of the mud-built home caved in entirely, burying seven children under a massive pile of debris and mud.

Emergency first responders from Rescue 1122 were alerted to the disaster and immediately dispatched teams to the site in the Rahimabad Bassi area.

According to Rescue 1122 Shangla Spokesperson Rasool Khan Sharif, emergency crews launched an intense, localized recovery operation as soon as they arrived on the scene. Working rapidly against the clock, rescuers managed to pull all seven victims from beneath the rubble within an hour.

Despite the speed of the rescue effort, the immense weight of the collapsed roof caused fatal injuries to six of the children. Authorities have identified the young victims as Nazira Bibi (14), Samira Bibi (13), Umaira (12), Nayab (7), Rizwanullah (5), and Haya Noor (5).

An eleventh-year-old child, identified as Marwa, survived the initial impact but was pulled from the debris in critical condition. She was rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment.

The heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow of grief over the local community and renewed pressing concerns regarding the safety of traditional mud dwellings in Pakistan’s mountainous northern regions. Such structures are highly vulnerable to degradation from environmental factors, including heavy seasonal rainfall and structural weathering.

This disaster follows a similar incident just last month in the Prang Majoki area of the Charsadda district, where another sudden roof collapse claimed the lives of three children and severely injured a couple, highlighting a deadly and persistent regional safety risk.
