SEOUL — A major infrastructure project in the heart of South Korea's capital turned into a disaster zone on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, when a section of an elevated overpass undergoing demolition suddenly collapsed, killing at least three workers and injuring three others.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time in a bustling commercial district of central Seoul. Emergency rescue teams, equipped with heavy lifting gear and search dogs, rushed to the site to extract laborers who were trapped beneath tons of pulverized concrete and twisted steel reinforcement bars.

The overpass, an aging piece of concrete infrastructure built in the late 1970s, was being systematically dismantled as part of an urban renewal project aimed at improving pedestrian spaces and traffic flow.

According to witnesses and initial site reports, a massive support span unexpectedly buckled while a specialized demolition excavator was operating on an adjacent section.
