SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND — Emergency services are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution after a devastating five-hour window on local roads left one man dead and two people hospitalized in separate multi-vehicle collisions.
The consecutive crashes, which occurred on Wednesday night, June 24, 2026, stretched local paramedic and rescue resources across two different regions of Southeast Queensland.
The first incident unfolded at approximately 6:50 PM on Forest Hill Fernvale Road in Lynford, located in the Somerset Region.
According to police reports, a Toyota Corolla and an Isuzu tip truck collided with such force that both vehicles instantly ignited. Passing motorists watched in horror as flames quickly engulfed the wreckage.
The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 72-year-old man from the nearby town of Coominya, suffered fatal injuries and was tragically declared deceased at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the sedan.
The driver of the tip truck, a 48-year-old man, managed to escape the burning wreckage. He was treated at the scene by Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics before being rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
As forensic crash investigators were still processing the scene in Lynford, emergency crews were called to a second major incident roughly five hours later on the New England Highway at Mount Kynoch, north of Toowoomba.
At 11:47 PM, a Holden Commodore and a Toyota LandCruiser collided head-on in a high-impact crash that completely crushed the sedan's engine bay.
The driver of the Holden, a 33-year-old woman from Darling Heights, became heavily trapped in the twisted metal. Fire and rescue crews worked for some time using hydraulic equipment to cut her free from the wreckage. She was transported to Toowoomba Hospital in stable condition but with significant leg injuries.
The 33-year-old male driver of the LandCruiser escaped with minor injuries and declined transport to the hospital.
The dual tragedies have put a spotlight back on the state's rising road toll. Investigators from the Forensic Crash Unit are actively examining both scenes to determine the exact causes of the collisions.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed either crash, or who has relevant dashcam footage from Forest Hill Fernvale Road around 6:50 PM or the New England Highway near Mount Kynoch around 11:45 PM, to come forward immediately.
