RAMGARH, India — A night of celebration turned into an immense tragedy when a violent head-on collision between a coal-laden truck and a pickup van claimed the lives of eight musical band members.
The catastrophic crash occurred late Thursday night, June 25, 2026 on the Ramgarh-Bokaro highway (NH-23) near Barlong village under the jurisdiction of the Rajrappa Police Station.
The victims, all part of a local band-tasha troupe, were returning to Ramgarh after performing at an event. Traveling from Gola in a pickup van, their journey was cut short around midnight when a speeding, coal-heavy commercial truck rammed directly into them.
According to preliminary findings by Ramgarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Alok Ranjan and SP Mukesh Kumar Lunayat, the truck driver had swerved into the wrong lane to overtake another vehicle. Unaware of the oncoming pickup van, the truck plowed straight into it. The force of the impact left the van completely mangled, trapping the musicians inside the crushed metal.
Local residents who heard the deafening crash rushed to the scene to assist emergency teams. The impact inflicted severe, critical injuries on everyone inside the van.
While seven victims tragically passed away almost instantly or shortly after reaching Ramgarh Sadar Hospital, the sole survivor was initially rushed to a specialized facility in Ranchi in critical condition. Rajrappa Police Station In-Charge Krishna Kumar later confirmed that the final injured victim succumbed to their wounds, raising the official death toll to eight.
The deceased have been identified as residents of the nearby Marang Marcha and Balsagra villages, with ages ranging from 22 to 40 years old.
The crash triggered immediate outrage among grieving families and local villagers, who converged on NH-23 to block all traffic movement. Angry protesters pointed out that the stretch of road has become a notorious "accident black spot," claiming that multiple lives had been lost at the exact location in just a matter of days due to administrative negligence regarding road safety.
Senior administrative and police officials eventually arrived at the scene, successfully pacifying the crowd and clearing the highway blockade after promising swift action.
"A four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), including an expert from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), has been constituted to ascertain the exact technical reasons behind the collision," stated SP Lunayat.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed his profound grief over the accident, sending formal condolences to the bereaved families. State authorities have initiated the process of delivering compensation to the victims' relatives, while an active police manhunt remains underway to capture the truck driver who fled the scene immediately after the crash.
