BEIJING, China — A powerful magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck a high-altitude region of the Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China’s Qinghai Province on Tuesday afternoon, June 16, 2026, leaving at least one person dead and four others injured.

The disaster triggered a swift, large-scale emergency response as national and local rescue teams rushed to the remote zone to search for trapped survivors and evaluate the extent of the damage.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the principal temblor struck precisely at 5:06 p.m. Beijing time at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was monitored at 37.80 degrees north latitude and 95.56 degrees east longitude, placing it near Da Qaidam—a region widely recognized as home to the mineral-rich Emerald Lake on the popular Qinghai-Gansu tourist route.

The main shock was far from isolated. Within a brief 40-minute window following the initial earthquake, the area was shaken by seven consecutive aftershocks, with the weakest registering a 3.0 magnitude and the most severe reaching a significant 4.9 magnitude. Later reports indicated the total number of aftershocks had climbed to over a dozen.

In the immediate aftermath of the quake, the Qinghai provincial emergency management bureau elevated the disaster status, issuing a Level II provincial emergency response by 6:10 p.m.. Concurrently, China's State Council earthquake relief headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management jointly activated a national Level IV emergency response to deploy a specialized work group directly to the field.

Safety precautions were instantly enacted across the industrial sectors of the prefecture. State media confirmed that all operating staff working at coal mining enterprises situated near the epicenter was successfully and safely evacuated without incident.

To support local search-and-rescue teams, the national comprehensive fire and rescue service quickly deployed 320 rescuers, 78 emergency vehicles, and 10 search-and-rescue dogs to comb through affected structures for any remaining individuals.

Initial assessments brought a degree of relief regarding vital services. The Ministry of Emergency Management and the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration jointly allocated 10,000 emergency supplies to the province, rushing a vital shipment of central disaster-relief tents, folding beds, quilts, blankets, household emergency kits, and tactical lighting equipment to affected families.

Furthermore, a coordinated relief mechanism was established involving prominent charities and corporations, including the Alibaba Group and the Chinese Red Cross Foundation, to guarantee a continuous supply of fresh drinking water and emergency food rations to displaced families. Officials state that thorough structural inspections and precise casualty tracking will continue over the coming days.
