QAZIGUND, Jammu and Kashmir — A wave of grief and anger has gripped a local community in South Kashmir after a young girl lost her life following a tragic hit-and-run incident involving an unidentified vehicle late on Thursday evening, July 9, 2026.

The incident occurred along a busy stretch of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway passing through the Qazigund area, a sector notorious for fast-moving transit traffic.

According to local witnesses, the young victim was attempting to cross the periphery of the roadway when a speeding vehicle struck her with immense force. Rather than stopping to render aid or call for emergency services, the driver capitalized on the dimming evening light and fled the scene at high speed.

Passersby and nearby shopkeepers rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the impact. They found the young girl lying unconscious on the asphalt with severe head injuries and multiple fractures. Using a privately owned vehicle, local residents quickly evacuated the critically injured girl to the nearest emergency hospital facility in Qazigund.

Despite the rapid response of the community, medical personnel on duty stated that the victim had sustained catastrophic, non-survivable trauma. She was tragically pronounced dead on arrival. The body was subsequently moved to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations and legal formalities before being handed over to her devastated family.

"It happened in a flash," said a local vendor who witnessed the aftermath. "We heard the screech of tires and a terrible thud. By the time we ran over, the car was completely gone. Leaving a child on the road like that is an absolute crime."
