Tragedy in Oman: Vehicle Rollover Near Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque Leaves One Dead, Four Injured

MUSCAT, OMAN — A severe single-vehicle rollover accident near the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque along Sultan Said bin Taimur Road left one person dead and four others injured. Emergency response teams and police personnel quickly responded to the scene to secure the area, treat the wounded, and restore traffic flow on the busy thoroughfare.

The accident occurred when the driver of a passenger vehicle lost control while traversing a stretch of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road in close proximity to the landmark Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. According to preliminary reports, the vehicle veered off the main roadway and flipped multiple times before coming to a rest along the shoulder.

Witnesses alerted emergency services immediately after seeing the vehicle veer off the roadway. Tragically, one passenger succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene before medical personnel could transport them to a nearby hospital. Four other occupants sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe; paramedics stabilized the survivors on-site before transferring them via emergency ambulances to a regional medical center for specialized trauma care. To manage the scene, officers from the Royal Oman Police (ROP) cordoned off several lanes to allow rescue operations and clearing crews to work safely, briefly diverting traffic through adjacent service routes.

Safety officials and investigators remained at the crash site for several hours to examine skid marks, vehicle impact points, and road conditions to determine the exact cause of the rollover. Initial findings suggest that sudden tire failure or loss of vehicle control at higher speeds may have contributed to the crash.

"Our primary focus during long-distance and highway travel must remain on strict speed compliance and routine vehicle checks," stated an ROP traffic safety official in a statement following the incident. "Road conditions can change quickly, making driver alertness and proper vehicle maintenance critical."

The Royal Oman Police renewed their call for all motorists—especially those traveling long distances or along major transit corridors—to strictly observe posted speed limits, ensure proper tire pressure, and avoid driving while fatigued. An official investigation into the crash details remains ongoing.
