Tragedy in Oakland: 2 Dead After Stolen SUV Crashes Into Police Vehicle, Injuring Officer

OAKLAND, CA — A routine patrol turned catastrophic in East Oakland on Monday morning, June 8, 2026 when an allegedly stolen SUV, driving at high speeds, slammed directly into an Oakland Police Department cruiser. The violent collision left two people dead and one police officer injured. The incident occurred at approximately 11:10 a.m. in the area of East 12th Street and 29th Avenue, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to authorities, the two officers inside the struck police SUV were completely unrelated to any active call or pursuit involving the stolen vehicle. They were simply driving down their patrol route when the high-speed crash occurred.

Moments before the impact, the suspect vehicle—identified as a stolen SUV—was reportedly speeding recklessly down East 12th Street. As it reached the intersection, it broadsided the police vehicle with immense force. "The officers in the OPD SUV were not involved in the call regarding the stolen vehicle, and just happened to be on patrol in the area," a source close to the investigation reported.

The sheer momentum of the high-speed crash left both vehicles heavily mangled, requiring a massive response from emergency personnel and the Oakland Fire Department.

First responders arriving at the scene discovered two occupants inside the stolen SUV who had sustained fatal injuries. Despite immediate medical intervention, both individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their identities have not yet been publicly released pending notification of their next of kin.

One of the Oakland police officers inside the rammed cruiser sustained injuries from the violent impact. The officer was quickly transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Officials have indicated that the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and the second officer in the vehicle escaped serious physical harm.

The intersection of East 12th Street and 29th Avenue became a scene of heavy investigation for several hours, with overhead police and news helicopters monitoring the site.

The fatal incident has reignited ongoing frustrations among East Oakland residents regarding reckless driving and traffic safety in the neighborhood. Community advocates point out that high-speed incidents involving stolen vehicles have become increasingly frequent on these specific corridors.

While traffic safety infrastructure upgrades—including the Lake Merritt to Fruitvale section of East 12th Street—are currently planned and fully funded for a late 2026 or early 2027 construction start, residents argue that immediate enforcement interventions are needed to curb the surge in dangerous driving.

The Oakland Police Department and independent traffic investigators remain on-site to reconstruct the collision and determine the exact chain of events leading up to the fatal impact.
