JALINGO, Nigeria — In a brutal assault on a remote community, heavily armed gunmen riding dozens of motorcycles swarmed the village of Binnari in Nigeria’s eastern Taraba State, killing at least 20 residents and causing widespread panic. The raid unfolded shortly after Friday prayers, as dozens of assailants swept through the rural settlement, opening fire indiscriminately on fleeing villagers.
According to local community leaders and surviving residents, the raiding party arrived on approximately 50 motorcycles, each carrying two armed men. The sudden outbreak of gunfire sent residents scrambling into surrounding bushlands in search of shelter.
"People were running in different directions to escape the attack. Nobody knew where it was safe to go," recalled resident Isiyaku Musa. "After the attackers left, we counted more than 20 bodies, and some people were still missing."
Police authorities initially confirmed the recovery of 10 bodies from the scene as search efforts began, while residents and local leaders reported finding at least 20 victims following the assailants' withdrawal.
In addition to the loss of life, the attackers systematically looted the community before departing. Community leader Malam Abubakar Saifullahi noted that the gunmen ransacked local shops, stealing cash, food supplies, provisions, and motorcycles abandoned by fleeing residents. Human rights groups also noted that several structures and food stocks were set on fire during the assault.
The attack in Taraba State highlights the persistent threat posed by armed bandit networks operating across northern and central Nigeria. These heavily armed groups frequently target remote villages, raiding homes, looting provisions, and abducting residents for ransom in regions where security forces face challenges covering rugged terrain.
The incident sparked swift condemnation from rights organizations. Amnesty International Nigeria criticized the official security response, warning that the failure to apprehend perpetrators continues to leave vulnerable rural communities exposed to repeated violence. Security forces have since deployed units to search for missing villagers, assess the extent of the destruction, and track down the perpetrators.
