Tragedy in Negros Oriental: American Citizen Shot Dead Inside Sibulan Home, Companion Injured

SIBULAN, NEGROS ORIENTAL — A quiet coastal neighborhood was shattered late Sunday night, July 12, 2026, when a world-renowned American marine scientist was shot and killed inside his home in Barangay Ajong. His companion, a 34-year-old Filipina, was injured and subjected to a traumatic assault as masked intruders ransacked the residence.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched a massive manhunt and formed a dedicated task force to track down the three armed suspects responsible for the brutal home invasion.

The victim was identified as 73-year-old Dr. Kent Carpenter, a highly respected American marine biologist and adjunct professor at Silliman University.

According to preliminary police reports, Dr. Carpenter and his 34-year-old partner were watching television in their living room in Purok 3, Barangay Ajong, at approximately 11:30 p.m. Three unidentified men wearing bonnets and face coverings forcibly broke into the residence.

Without warning, one of the armed intruders fired a handgun, striking Dr. Carpenter in the head and killing him on the spot.

Following the fatal shooting, the assailants allegedly sexually assaulted Dr. Carpenter's partner and ransacked the home for valuables before fleeing into the night. First responders from the Sibulan Municipal Police Station arrived shortly after to find Dr. Carpenter lifeless. His partner was rescued from the scene and is now under the care and protection of the police Women and Children Protection Desk.

The Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NORPPO) announced the creation of SITG Carpenter (Special Investigation Task Group), a multi-unit task force dedicated strictly to solving the murder.

The task force includes investigators from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), the Provincial Anti-Cybercrime Team, and the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO).

"Initial investigation points to robbery as a primary motive, as the suspects made off with various valuables from the residence," said Capt. Stephen Jaynard Polinar, spokesperson for NORPPO, during a press briefing. "However, our investigators are keeping an open mind and pursuing all possible leads given the other tragic circumstances of this crime."

Authorities confirmed that the U.S. Embassy in Manila and Dr. Carpenter's next of kin in the United States have been formally notified of the tragedy.

The sudden and violent death of Dr. Carpenter has sent shockwaves through the local and international scientific communities, where his profound academic legacy and global impact will be deeply missed.

As an adjunct professor and associate researcher at Silliman University's Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences, he worked closely with the Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management. Dr. Carpenter was celebrated worldwide for his pioneering research on marine fish biodiversity, most notably authoring the seminal scientific paper that identified the Verde Island Passage in the Philippines as the "Center of Marine Shore Fish Biodiversity."

Colleagues, academic institutions, and environmental advocacy groups flooded social media with tributes, condemning the senseless violence and demanding swift justice.

Police regional director Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño strongly condemned the attack, assuring the public that the PNP is deploying all necessary resources to bring the perpetrators to justice.
