Tragedy in Nagaon: 3 Dead, 2 Critical as Car Bursts into Flames After Hitting Pole

NAGAON, ASSAM — In a horrifying road mishap, three people were burnt to death and two others sustained life-threatening injuries after their vehicle crashed into a streetlight pole and burst into flames in the Puranigudam area of Assam’s Nagaon district.

The fatal crash took place along the highway in Kenapatti, near Puranigudam. The vehicle (bearing registration number AR 01 W 5107) was traveling from Arunachal Pradesh toward Guwahati carrying five occupants.

According to preliminary reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle, swerving sharply before slamming into a heavy concrete streetlight pole situated on the road divider. The violent collision triggered an immediate, massive fire that engulfed the passenger cabin within seconds.

Panic ensued in the area as nearby residents and commuters rushed toward the scene, but the overwhelming heat and roaring flames prevented bystanders from reaching three occupants trapped inside.

Three passengers trapped inside were unable to break free and died at the scene, while two survivors—vehicle owner Vikas Kumar and driver Sonu Kumar—managed to escape or were pulled clear from the burning wreckage. Both survivors suffered severe burn injuries and trauma, receiving immediate emergency treatment at a local facility before being rushed to Guwahati for specialized critical care.

Local police arrive at the crash site shortly after the incident to secure the area, extinguish the fire, and retrieve the remains for post-mortem examinations.

Officials noted that the occupants were reportedly residents of Bihar heading to Guwahati. Authorities believe the three deceased passengers boarded the vehicle mid-journey. Investigations are ongoing to formally verify the identities of the deceased and establish whether mechanical failure, excessive speed, or driver fatigue led to the tragic crash.

This tragic accident has once again raised serious concerns over highway speed compliance and safety infrastructure along the busy transit corridors connecting Assam and its neighboring northeastern states. Local authorities and transport safety activists have noted that high-impact collisions with central road dividers and unshielded utility poles continue to pose severe risks to long-distance travelers. As police wrap up their preliminary site evaluation, local administration officials are expected to assess traffic safety measures and speed monitoring mechanisms in the Puranigudam stretch to prevent similar horrific incidents in the future.
