Tragedy in Melbourne’s Southeast: Man Killed by Truck at Notoriously Dangerous Intersection

MELBOURNE, Australia — A busy metropolitan intersection has claimed another life after a male pedestrian was struck and killed by a truck in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs on Sunday evening, June 14, 2026. The horrific incident has reignited fierce community concern over pedestrian safety at heavily trafficked heavy-vehicle corridors.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 6:10 PM at the busy intersection of Burlington Street and Huntingdale Road in Oakleigh.

Emergency services, including Victoria Police and paramedics, rushed to the intersection following frantic calls from witnesses who saw the truck collide with the pedestrian.

Despite the rapid response and the efforts of first responders, the impact proved fatal. The male pedestrian, who has yet to be formally identified by authorities, suffered catastrophic injuries and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and sole occupant of the truck was not physically injured in the crash. Officials confirmed that the driver stopped immediately and remained at the scene to assist emergency personnel and investigators with their inquiries.

Following the crash, Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives cordoned off the area to conduct an extensive forensic analysis of the scene. This forced the complete shutdown of large sections of Huntingdale Road for several hours and required the establishment of major detours, causing significant traffic delays across the Oakleigh and Huntingdale areas as evening commuters were diverted away from the site.

The intersection is well-known to locals as a highly challenging bottleneck where residential foot traffic frequently intersects with heavy commercial vehicles and industrial transport routes.

While the exact circumstances leading up to the collision remains under active investigation, Victoria Police is treating the incident as an ongoing priority. No charges have been laid at this stage. "The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing," a Victoria Police spokesperson said in an official statement. "Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam/CCTV footage, or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers."

Authorities are appealing to any motorists who may have been driving along Huntingdale Road or Burlington Street between 6:00 PM and 6:20 PM with active dash cam recording to step forward.

The tragedy has sparked an immediate wave of advocacy on local community forums, with residents long complaining about the speed limits and lack of adequate pedestrian intervals at the Oakleigh intersection. Local transport safety advocates argue that as heavy vehicle traffic continues to grow in Melbourne's southeastern industrial zones, structural upgrades—such as dedicated pedestrian head-starts and protective barriers—are urgently required to protect vulnerable community members.
