MELBOURNE — A tight-knit community in Melbourne’s outer west has been plunged into mourning after a devastating house fire claimed the life of a three-year-old boy, leaving his father in a coma after a desperate attempt to rescue him.
Emergency services were called to Newbury Street in Werribee just after midnight on Monday, June 1, 2026. Arriving to find the single-story brick home completely engulfed in flames, it took 40 firefighters from Fire Rescue Victoria and the Country Fire Authority roughly an hour to bring the intense blaze under control.
Inside the charred ruins, crews discovered the body of three-year-old Jordan Dashwood.
Jordan’s mother, Janelle, and his older brother managed to escape the property. However, his 40-year-old father, Jeremy, suffered severe burns and extensive smoke inhalation while trying to break back into the home to save his youngest son. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he remains in a medically induced coma. Two of the family's loyal dogs also perished in the scene.
In a single night, the family's entire life was completely reduced to ashes. A GoFundMe page has been set up by family friend Jardine Jackson to help support the grieving mother and surviving son as they face an unimaginably dark road ahead.
"Little Jordan was a bright light in this world, full of innocent joy, and his absence leaves a void that can never be filled," Jackson wrote. "They did not just lose their home; they lost their precious little boy, their loyal pets, their memories."
Forensics personnel and arson chemists spent Monday morning examining the hollowed-out, blackened shell of the house. Arson squad detectives confirmed that while the exact cause of the fire is still being investigated, it is not being treated as suspicious. Authorities declined to comment on early media speculation regarding whether a malfunctioning e-scooter battery may have triggered the sudden, aggressive blaze.
As the Werribee community rallies to support Janelle and her eldest son, a vigil of flowers and teddy bears is already growing outside the police tape framing the ruins of the family home.
