Tragedy in Marondera: High-Profile Businessman Among 6 Dead in Zimbabwe Helicopter Crash

HARARE, Zimbabwe — All six people on board a private helicopter were killed on Wednesday evening, September 30, 2026 after the aircraft crashed in the rural area of Marondera, in Zimbabwe's Mashonaland East province. State officials and police confirmed there were no survivors in the accident.

The victims include high-profile Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, who were traveling alongside three other passengers and two pilots. The helicopter was en route to the capital, Harare, when it went down around 5:00 PM local time in the rural terrain roughly 70 kilometers east of the capital.

Government spokesman Nick Mangwana and the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that emergency responders and law enforcement teams were dispatched to the crash site to secure the area and recover the victims' remains. High-ranking officials expressed their deep condolences to the families and friends of those lost in the disaster.

Civil aviation authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the fatal crash. Technical teams and investigators are examining the wreckage in Marondera to ascertain whether mechanical failure, adverse weather conditions, or operational factors contributed to the incident.

Villagers in the surrounding Marondera district reported hearing a sudden engine sputter followed by a loud impact as the aircraft struck open farmland. Eye-witnesses were among the first to reach the remote scene, attempting to offer assistance before emergency services arrived to extinguish small fires triggered by the fuel tank rupture.

The sudden tragedy has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe's business and political communities, where Chivayo was a widely recognized figure known for his extensive commercial ventures and public profile. Messages of sympathy and tributes have begun pouring in across social media platforms from prominent corporate leaders and public figures throughout the nation.

Air accident investigators from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) have cordoned off the wreckage perimeter to collect flight data and examine structural components. Officials indicated that preliminary findings regarding weather conditions at the time of the flight and flight path telemetry will be made public in an upcoming progress report as the multi-agency inquiry continues.
