IMPHAL, India — Tensions have flared once again across Manipur following a deadly ambush in which armed militants targeted a group of civilians gathering firewood along the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts. The assault left four people dead, three severely injured, and three others missing.
The incident occurred early in the morning near Khongbal Sunurok Uyok, close to Nongshum village, an area situated along the volatile fringe dividing the valley and hill districts.
According to local reports and security officials, a group of approximately 16 villagers had ventured into the nearby foothill forest to collect firewood for domestic use. Around 7:00 a.m., suspected militants positioned on surrounding elevated terrain suddenly opened fire on the unsuspecting civilians without warning.
Two individuals died instantly at the scene from gunshot wounds, while a third victim succumbed to fatal injuries shortly after being rushed to a private medical facility in Imphal. Three additional civilians sustained serious bullet wounds and were evacuated under heavy guard to local hospitals for urgent surgical intervention.
Emergency personnel confirmed that three other members of the firewood-collecting party remain unaccounted for in the dense jungle terrain following the rapid escalation.
The morning's attack sparked immediate public outrage and widespread civil unrest across Imphal. Angered by the sudden violence, grieving family members and local residents transported the bodies of the deceased to the capital city, placing them outside official government premises in a poignant demonstration demanding justice, immediate security intervention, and protection for vulnerable border communities.
Demonstrators blocked key thoroughfares, leading to widespread closures of local markets, shops, and commercial establishments throughout Imphal East.
"We were simply loading firewood onto our vehicles when heavy gunfire erupted from the hills above us," recounted one surviving villager receiving treatment in Imphal. "It was a sudden and unprovoked attack on unarmed civilians."
In response to the incident, combined security forces—comprising state police, central paramilitary units, and army personnel—were immediately deployed to reinforce the area. Joint search and combing operations have been launched across the Khongbal Sunurok Uyok and Nongshum ridge lines to locate the three missing villagers and track down the armed assailants responsible for the assault.
High-alert security corridors and road blockades have been established surrounding government facilities in Imphal to prevent further civil unrest, while local representatives have urged military authorities to step up permanent frontline patrols along vulnerable rural peripheries.
