Tragedy in Liloan: 33-Year-Old Worker Crushed to Death by Falling Granite Slabs

LILOAN, Cebu — What was supposed to be a routine material delivery turned into a workplace nightmare on Wednesday afternoon, July 22, 2026 after a 33-year-old laborer was instantly killed when a massive shipment of heavy granite slabs collapsed and fell directly on top of him.

The catastrophic industrial accident has sent shockwaves through the local labor community and prompted immediate investigations into onsite safety protocols.

According to the preliminary report released by the Liloan Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred at a commercial property development site in the municipality. The victim, identified as a seasoned 33-year-old logistics and construction worker, was part of a crew tasked with offloading large, heavily imported granite slabs from a transport container.

Eyewitnesses and co-workers stated that as the victim was assisting in securing the cargo straps inside the vehicle, the heavily stacked slabs suddenly shifted balance. In a matter of seconds, the massive stone sheets cascaded forward, trapping the worker beneath hundreds of kilograms of solid stone before he could scramble to safety.

"We heard a loud cracking sound followed by a massive thud," said a visibly shaken fellow laborer. "We tried to lift the stone off him immediately, but the weight was just too immense for manpower alone."

Desperate to save their colleague, workers utilized heavy machinery and crowbars to lift the crushing slabs. Emergency medical services and rescue personnel from the Liloan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) arrived at the scene within minutes of the distress call.

Despite the rapid extrication efforts by first responders, the victim had sustained massive, catastrophic trauma to his chest and head. Attending paramedics confirmed he had succumbed to his injuries almost instantly upon impact. His body was subsequently transported to a local funeral home for a formal autopsy.

Following the tragedy, local police cordoned off the unloading zone to preserve the scene for forensic analysis. Investigators are focusing heavily on whether the cargo was improperly secured during transit or if standard mechanical aids, such as cranes or specialized forklifts, were missing during the hazardous unloading process.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office is expected to launch its own independent parallel inquiry to review the subcontractor's compliance with mandatory occupational safety and health standards.

Representatives of the company have expressed deep condolences to the victim's family and have publicly pledged to fully cooperate with the ongoing police investigation while providing immediate financial assistance to cover funeral and burial expenses.
