Tragedy in Lanao del Sur: 5 Dead, 2 Injured After Landslide Buries Homes in Calanogas

CALANOGAS, Lanao del Sur, Philippines — A devastating, pre-dawn landslide triggered by torrential rains completely buried several homes in Barangay Ngirngir early on Friday morning, July 10, 2026 leaving five people dead, two injured, and sparking a desperate search for six individuals who remain missing.

The disaster struck around 2:30 a.m. when a large section of a nearby hillside collapsed, sending a massive wall of mud and debris instantly crashing down upon sleeping residents.

Emergency responders faced immediate logistical nightmares attempting to reach the remote village. The same relentless weather conditions caused secondary landslides that rendered the primary access roads completely impassable to vehicles.

Personnel from the Calanogas Municipal Police Station, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and local disaster management teams were forced to travel approximately 10 kilometers entirely on foot. Armed with whatever equipment they could carry, rescuers finally arrived at the scene at around 6:00 a.m. to begin the grueling task of digging through the debris.

Authorities have officially released the identities of the five victims recovered from the mud: Norhaya Camar, Mohsin Juhary, Naifa Mansawi, Akmad Camar, and Norhaina Ali.

Two others were successfully pulled from the rubble alive with varying injuries and were rushed to receive medical attention.

Meanwhile, heavy anxiety hangs over the community as search-and-retrieval teams utilize both manual shovels and heavy mechanical equipment to locate six missing villagers. Police identified those still unaccounted for as Mujahid Abdulmajid, Mobairah Abdulrashid, Norhasan Abdulrashid, Lilikan Arab, Norlin Ali, and Norhanima Ali.

According to meteorological and police reports, the catastrophic hillside failure was the direct result of prolonged, saturated soil conditions. The region has been battered by continuous heavy downpours brought by the southwest monsoon (habagat), which has been drastically intensified by the presence of Super Typhoon "Inday" passing through the Philippine area.

Local government units and regional ministries are currently coordinating emergency relief for the displaced families while efforts remain focused on clearing the blocked roadways to allow more heavy rescue assets into the disaster zone.
