LAGOS, NIGERIA — Tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026 after a two-storey building collapsed at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State, leaving one person dead and two others rescued alive.
The incident occurred around midnight when workers were conducting manual demolition work on the structure. The building suddenly gave way, trapping multiple workers beneath heavy debris and concrete slabs.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) dispatched its Alpha Eagle Response Team from the Cappa, Oshodi Response Unit at 12:56 a.m. following a distress call. Responders arrived swiftly, immediately activating the State's Emergency Response Plan to coordinate a multi-agency search-and-rescue operation alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
Emergency teams worked tirelessly through the night to clear debris and extract trapped victims. Responders successfully extricated two adult males alive from beneath the rubble, where LASAMBUS personnel administered immediate first aid before transferring them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Tragically, search teams also recovered the body of an adult male, who was pronounced dead at the scene. To ensure public safety and keep onlookers from obstructing heavy machinery, LASEMA and local security operatives secured and cordoned off the entire area.
In a statement, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased worker and wished the injured survivors a full recovery.
"Preliminary findings indicate that the building was being manually demolished when the collapse occurred. We urge members of the public and property developers to strictly adhere to physical planning regulations and engage only certified structural professionals for demolition and construction projects."
State officials reminded residents to report distressed, unapproved, or unsafe building projects through the state's emergency toll-free lines (767 or 112). The site remains under safety evaluation to clear remaining hazardous debris.
